Tim’s American Café
A small neighborhood bar located a couple of blocks off the beaten path that’s really more of an eating establishment than a bar. This slightly out-of-the-way location is in an older Altoona residential neighborhood where there are two bars located within a short block of each other. All of Tim’s food is really good. You may want to try the chicken wings, chicken salad, steak salad, or a burger or steak sandwich.

The Knickerbocker Tavern
The Knickerbocker Tavern is the center section of a group of Philadelphia-style row houses. Excellent food and local bar atmosphere where everybody fits in. Great soups, and for those of you who enjoy simplicity, the number one BLT (bacon, lettuce, tomato) sandwich in the world. The outdoor courtyard seating in the summer time has a real European feel.

Jack and George’s
Another local bar with great food and friendly service. Everything’s good, but the hamburgers are outstanding.

The Phoenix
Once again, a couple blocks back from a main street, at 3rd Street and 4th Avenue in the East End section of Altoona. The Phoenix is a small friendly restaurant with a small bar. Lots of good food, but the baked fish is a ten.

Outback Steakhouse
Okay, we’re not including chain restaurants, and Outback is actually Australian, but the food, especially the steak, is excellent. The prime rib Outback style, and you have to make sure to ask for it this way, is a real treat.
